Research

Design Sciences conducts research and research education in several different areas, such as Certec – Rehabilitation Engineering, Ergonomics and Aerosol Technology, Industrial Design, Innovation Engineering, Packaging Logistics and Product Development.

Certec – Rehabilitation Engineering

Promoting greater equality is an important goal of Certec's research. They call it “rehabilitation engineering and design”, based on the perspective of the person concerned, and they conduct the research in the context of the life situation in which the persons finds themselves. Certec usually say that their research is about people, technology, education and design in a society for all.

Co-creation is a central concept – research that emerges across subject boundaries and together with the people involved in it. In co-creation, new technology and new design concepts are developed with the aim that all people can participate in and contribute to society. A current research area is universal design, which is about designing a society for all. Universal design has emerged in architecture and design as an effort to reach all people regardless of their conditions.

Ergonomics and Aerosol Technology

Ergonomics and Aerosol Technology carry out research on the interaction between people and their surrounding environment and what this means for the design of technology, technological systems and organizations. This field is often called human-technology systems. This can be about participating in and designing environments for the good of people based on the United Nations’ Global Goals. The research is carried out in workplaces and in other settings where people reside in their daily lives.

Industrial Design

Industrial design directs its attention to design and trend management, metacharacteristics — the symbolic values and hidden messages of products — and design methodology, processes, methods and tools.

Innovation Engineering

Innovation Engineering has a broad and interdisciplinary profile of innovation research, which provide explanations, understanding, frameworks methods and tools to tackle grand challenges like the ones related to the UN’s Global Goals. Innovation Engineering study the outcomes and performance of innovation activities, the innovation process (how to get new insights, explore and implement new product and processes), the methods and tools used in the innovation process, as well as development of innovation methods and development of individual innovation skills.

The research at Innovation Engineering can be summarized in the following areas: Business Models, Innovation and Entrepreneurship and Sustainable Innovation.

Packaging Logistics

Packaging Logistics is about understanding and contributing to the development of processes in packaging design and packaging logistics. The research is applied, socially relevant and takes place in close cooperation with businesses and public actors. Packaging Logistics is part of major multidisciplinary research initiatives in areas such as city logistics, freight transport, retail and e-commerce. The division collaborate with researchers from many other areas, such as business administration, service management, logistics, cultural geography, innovation technology and design.

Product Development

The Product Development and Design research lab (PDD research lab) at LTH contributes to improving product development and design capabilities in industry through research results that create new insights and add novel knowledge to science and practice on how needs and ideas are transformed into solutions that are valuable for stakeholders.

In short, the mission can be expressed as: "Improving product development and design capabilities in industry"

Global goals

At Design Sciences, we start out from the UN’s global goals to create sustainable living conditions for everyone. For us, it’s about designing technologies and environments for the good of all people based on these sustainability goals.
