PRODUCT DEVELOPMENT: Bio-based materials for 3D printing

Investigate if and how new bio-based materials can be 3D-printed.

– Publicerad den 7 January 2021

Background

New bio-based materials are constantly being developed, for instance for use in 3D-printing and injection molding. However, in order to successfully use a new material, the manufacturing process must be adapted to the properties of the material. For some experimental bio-based plastics entirely new processes may have to be developed.

This Master’s thesis will be part of the project "STEPS - Sustainable Plastics and Transition Pathways ", funded by MISTRA.

Objective

The goal of this Master’s thesis is to investigate if and how new bio-based materials can be 3D-printed, for instance using fused filament fabrication, selective laser sintering, stereolithography or completely new processes.

Work description

The work will involve identifying, testing and evaluating relevant 3D-printing technologies and/or develop new technologies such as syringe-based printers for use with bio-based plastics.
