PRODUCT DEVELOPMENT: Open master's thesis – Product redesign according to sustainability criteria

Master's thesis projects on different product development methods that can reduce negative environmental impacts.

– Publicerad den 3 May 2022

Background

Product manufacturers will be forced to make transitions towards significantly more sustainable production and operation due to the ongoing global warming. Each product or service has potential to reduce negative environmental impacts.

The master's thesis will be conducted in cooperation with a company for the selected product or service. New solutions can be found through product redesign, radical innovation or a combination of different approaches. A traditional physical product can in some cases be replaced by a new service or software solution that reduces negative impact on the environment.

Work description

The project includes different product development methods that can reduce negative environmental impacts:

  • Systematical application of tools and methods for sustainable product development and circular economy.
  • Replacement of problematic materials with more sustainable ones.
  • Redesign of products for easier disassembly and recycling, extend the product lifespan, reduce quantity of built-in materials, etc..
  • Reduction of energy consumption during production and exploration phase of product life cycle.

Apply several or a few of the most appropriate approaches for improved sustainability. Check the open space for radical solutions.

Students are welcome to propose their own product proposal and company contact. The generally presented master thesis topic can be changed to fit a specific challenge.

It is preferred that the master's thesis is conducted in a group of two.
