PRODUCT DEVELOPMENT/TECHNICAL DESIGN: Design a new medical laboratory device – Capillon Analytics
Are you passionate about innovation and cutting-edge science as well as eager to make a significant impact in a dynamic startup environment? We are looking for a master student who will be developing a new medical laboratory device that does not exist on the market today.

Background
Capillon Analytics AB is an analytical laboratory in Medicon Village Lund, specializing in chemical analysis using mass spectrometers and mass balance data. We're building a multidisciplinary team of professionals who are developing a novel method of detecting cancer. The research team includes scientists from Lund University, John Hopkins University and Chalmers University of Technology. We are heading towards clinical validation for our cancer detection test in 2026.
Project
The master student will be responsible for developing and implementing a new medical lab tool that does not exist on the market today. The device will be used to streamline a laboratory process that includes efficiently cutting large quantities of hair into small pieces so that they can be analysed in the lab. Part of the challenge is that human hair is very light, prone to going adrift and can have very different quality and structure. Cutting today is a slow, time-consuming process.
Objective
The project includes identifying and understanding the problem, identifying and testing for possible contaminates as well as designing, building and evaluating a model.
Method
- Identify and understand the challenge of cutting hair in a laboratory environment. How can a new device (or another innovation) make this a more efficient process?
- Identify and test for contaminants that can contaminate the hair during the cutting process.
- Build and test a device model (or other solution) using contaminate-free materials that can be used to streamline a testing process.
- Test and evaluate the device or solution, including documenting the work.
- Collaborate closely with research and lab staff.
Your qualifications
- Current or recent enrolment in a graduate program in industrial engineering, innovation technology, technical design, product development or equivalent.
- Excellent problem-solving skills and ability to work independently as well as part of a team.
- Familiarity or experience working with contaminations in laboratory environments or device model is a not mandatory but can be a plus.
- Effective communication skills, both written and verbal (English or Swedish).
What the company offers
- You will be part of a startup company who are developing a transdisciplinary and novel method of detecting cancer.
- You will work alongside a highly professional team committed to making a difference in the world. Your colleges and mentors will be leading researchers in the fields of evolutionary biology, molecular medicine, and biomarker discovery.
- Opportunity to develop a new medical laboratory device and the chance that it contributes to impactful medical research.
