LTH AEROSOLS seminar: Recent advancements in aerosol research in East Asian area
This presentation aims to showcase recent advancements in aerosol research, focusing on their applications in various fields, from environmental health to infectious disease control. The work presented here stems from our research group's mission to improve global public health through cutting-edge studies on the effects of ambient air and other environmental media on human health.
Visiting Professor Tomoaki Okuda will give a seminar on the topic “Recent advancements in aerosol research in East Asian area”.
This presentation will introduce several key developments, including: a novel method for evaluating the health effects of particulate matter using cyclones and water-soluble filters; techniques for particle measurement in enclosed environments; insights into the charging state of ambient submicron particles; and innovative particle measurement technologies contributing to infectious disease control. In particular, we focus on the chemical and biological toxicity evaluation of particulate matter. Although there are many research focusing on the chemical composition of particles, the particle toxicity cannot be solely explained by their chemical characteristics. Therefore, our laboratory evaluates the toxicity of particulate matter using chemical methods, such as measuring oxidative potential, which is a chemical parameter related to biological effects, and also conducts cellular exposure experiments using human cells to analyze particulate matter from a biochemical perspective and to identify the causes of adverse health effects.
About the presenter:
Tomoaki Okuda is a professor in atmospheric environment, Keio University, Japan. His current research focuses on physical and chemical properties of aerosols such as chemical composition, surface area and charging state, as they provide metrics for their adverse health effects. He tries to elucidate these parameters of atmospheric aerosols by developing original methods to measure them. He is a recipient of the 2015 Asian Young Aerosol Scientist Award, awarded by the Asian Aerosol Research Assembly, 2023 The Commendation for Science and Technology by the Minister of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology, 2014 Creative Work Award for Young Scientists, awarded by the Japan Society for Atmospheric Environment, Young Researchers' Award 2015, awarded by Japan Association of Aerosol Science and Technology, and many other awards. He has authored and co-authored over 100 peer reviewed papers in leading environmental science journals, which have been collectively cited over 4,000 times with h-index 33 (by google scholar).
