Going beyond packaging: Investigating the logistics and supply chain implications of the EU Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation

Background

The EU’s new Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation (PPWR) is driving changes in how companies design, use and recover packaging, with potentially significant implications for logistics systems. Corrugated cardboard pallets offer advantages such as low weight, recyclability and integration into existing cardboard recycling flows. However, regulatory requirements for reusable transport packaging may challenge their continued use and affect transport flows, logistics operations and supply chain efficiency.

The project

The purpose of this thesis is to investigate how PPWR-related requirements influence the logistics and supply chain performance of corrugated cardboard pallets compared with traditional returnable pallet solutions. In collaboration with industrial partners, you will map existing transport and material flows, conduct a life cycle assessment (LCA), and compare the logistics costs and environmental impacts of alternative pallet solutions under different operating conditions.

The results will provide insights into the role of corrugated cardboard pallets in future supply chains and support companies in making informed decisions about pallet solutions as packaging regulations evolve.
